Why plan before swiping?
Nine Slide has simple rules, but a swipe changes the entire board. Instead of only asking “which pair can I merge?”, ask “what board will this move leave behind?” Consider the other tiles, the goal of the mode and the new pieces that may appear. No sequence guarantees a win.
1. Set priorities for your mode
In Target, creating or preserving the requested tile matters more than immediate XP. In XP, any result above 9 has direct value. In Time, speed matters; in Moves, every swipe counts.
If you need a 9 tile, 3 × 3 = 9 is useful. If you need XP, 9 × 9 = 81 XP may be the better choice. Choose according to your objective, not just the largest available number.
2. Think about every tile
A swipe can merge several pairs, not just the obvious one. Before moving left, imagine where the remaining tiles will end up, then compare with a swipe upward. Could you isolate a valuable tile, or bring useful numbers closer together? The final arrangement may matter more than a small difference in XP.
3. Use sums to prepare future merges
2 + 3 = 5 may not look impressive, but it creates new possibilities. Another 5 could multiply with it, or that 5 could take part in a sum above 9 when you need XP. Ask whether the new tile helps your goal, opens a route or limits your next move.
4. Balance XP with available space
When a result exceeds 9, the tiles disappear and their value becomes XP. This opens board space, but consumes both tiles. 4 + 6 = 10 XP is useful when points are your priority; preserving the 4 could be smarter if you need it to build your target number. There is no single perfect choice for every mode.
5. Recognize green-gem opportunities
Matching high-value tiles 7 × 7, 8 × 8 and 9 × 9 can earn green gems. 6 × 6 does not grant a gem reward. Three matches of at least 7 × 7 in one game activate Gem Streak, adding 5 bonus green gems. The bonus can be earned repeatedly.
Decide whether to convert those high numbers into XP immediately or position them to earn gems as well. Your time and remaining moves still matter.
6. Save power-ups for the right moment
Depending on the mode, power-ups can add time, add moves, show upcoming tiles or reposition tiles. Before spending a resource, make sure it improves your chance of completing the current objective. Cosmetic backgrounds and skins never change tile values.
7. Practice with three questions
During your next three games, pause before important moves and ask:
- What is my goal right now? A target tile, XP, time or fewer swipes?
- What will this swipe create or remove? Look at the entire remaining board.
- What can I do next? Identify at least one follow-up move.
Compare these choices with moves you make on impulse. The idea is to become more deliberate without losing the fun.
Quick pre-game checklist
- Identify the mode's objective before chasing big combinations.
- Matching tiles multiply; different tiles add.
- Results above 9 become XP.
- Look at the whole board, not just one pair.
- Consider saving valuable tiles for later opportunities.
- Use power-ups only when they help the current game.
